Company - HAX Limited
Product - FRUITRIM - a mixture of concentrated fruit juice and dextrins from grain for use as a fat replacer
Situation - Enquiry about legality of its use in food
1. The Committee will wish to be aware that the Secretariat has received an enquiry from HAX Limited about the legality of use in food of FRUITRIM¿ . This is a carbohydrate-based fat replacer, which has already been marketed in Italy and the USA where it is currently being used in a variety of foods and baked items as a replacement for solid and liquid fats.
2. FRUITRIM is formed in a patented process by mixing concentrated fruit juice with starch. The manufacturing process involves the reduction of the water content of the ingredients to a minimum of 77% soluble solids. The product is intended for use as a food ingredient, but can also be used as a binder, emulsifier and anti-oxidant.
3. As for Simplesse, which was considered in 1989, the Secretariat has concluded that FRUITRIM is not a novel food as it is made from conventional food ingredients. A letter to the company is at Annex I and it will be copied to the Commission in order that other Member States can be informed.
